To answer your question – you can likely decrease the cook time but I’m not sure by how much – or you can leave the cook time the same and the pot will just take less time to reach pressure due to less contents in the pot.

Tonight I tried your Khichdi recipe for my daughter who was insistent I make it to soothe her tummy so I decided to make it but I tweaked the recipe a bit – I used brown basmati rice instead of white, added a little bit of Hing and 2 whole red chillies to the tadka, added mixed frozen vegetables and used only 4.5 cups of water instead of the 6 mentioned by you but I cooked it for 25 minutes. This recipe is so simple and satisfying! Love your blog and recipes! I haven’t soaked the lentils or rice (and I’ve used brown basmati rice) and it’s been very soupy after cooking. You can use sona masoori for this – keep everything the same I prefer basmati but have made this using sona masoori as well. Great recipe but can I substitute the basmati rice with cauliflower rice? You can drizzle some hot ghee while serving and garnish with coriander leaves . Press the sauté button, then add the ghee or oil. suggestions for when/adjustments for that? The cooker should not be kept near any water-based surface to avoid electric shock. Need to reduce water content to four cups. This is a dish we’ll definitely make again!
When you re-heat khichdi or any dal after it has been in the fridge then you almost always have to add water or broth to thin it out over the stovetop! Naturally release pressure for 20 minutes. Looking forward to making the Indian food I love with the convenience of the pressure cooker.

However, after being in the refrigerator, it had congealed into one sponge-like mass, and even after reheating and adding a bit more ghee, it was still uniform and distinction of the grains was lost. Open the valve to release any remaining pressure. I haven’t tried halving it but I’m sure it’ll be fine if you do! Jaya, I’m so glad that you made and liked this! This recipe calls for natural pressure release for 20 minutes, so once the recipe is done, wait an additional 20 minutes then open the valve.
